I have owned this Matchless G80 CSR for many many years and have all the performance parts that I used in racing it, dual spark plug heads, hairspring valve heads and wound wire spring heads, Wal Philips Fuel injectors, Amal GP carbs, more. i am slowly working to put it on the street to hear it run again thru a muffler for a change. The all alloy engine was considered a "gerenade" in its day if you got too anxious to win on dirt tracks, road courses(?) AMA style were not much fun due to the Harley crowd bumping but the bike would handle and slide easy.

I have a 1951 Matchless G3LS that served as a dispatch motorcycle in the Army of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. As I understand it, the City of Luxembourg had acquired 13 of them when the artillery unit disbanded in the mid 60's. Of the 13, seven were overhauled and painted black for city police use. Five were kept as spares. And one was stripped for new rider training. The one I have was one of the spares, still in olive drab paint, and with only 1,200 km on the odometer when I bought it at the police auction in 1976. The city police replaced them all with new Kawasakis and auctioned off all of the Matchless' - except for the training bike. After sitting in storage for some 15 years, all I had to do was clean it up and clear the gas lines before I was on the road! It only took about five jumps on the kick start before that magneto fired it right up. That's the best hundred and twenty five bucks I've ever spent! I rode it regularly until I returned to the USA in 1981. Now it sits in my garage waiting for me to get it ready again for the road. (Been busy building a family.) It is 99.99% original - just as I bought it. I've only replaced the handle grips and I had to mount some kind of 'universal' brake light switch as the original switch was broken when I bought it. As imperfect as the paint job is, I think I'll just leave it in the original Luxembourg Army OD as I think this may be the only one of it's kind in the US with this pedigree - Or is it???. The only alteration I'm considering is to change the gearing. I believe it's geared for off-road military use because I'm lucky to get past 50 mph - downhill - with a tailwind! I'd be happy to hear from anyone who can tell me more about what I've got?? When the weather gets nicer, I'll roll it out of the garage and send you a photo for the gallery section. Oh. I think I'll join the club, too. I'm glad to have found your website. Nice job.
