1939 AJS Model 26T

This beauty is thought to be mostly original. This 1939/26T is a competition model, based on the standard twin port 350cc Model 26. It has a slim 2 gallon black and chrome petrol tank and a 7" headlamp with a lighting switch and ampmeter is fitted, in place of the standard tank with instrument panel and 8" bare headlamp. Special shallow section chrome plated mudguards are also fitted. You could easily mistake this for a bike of the '50's, were it not for the typical pre-war style girder forks. Some other features of this competition model were, single port head, separate magneto ignition and separate dynamo lighting system. The Dunlop competition saddle had adjustable spring mounting. A heavyweight gearbox was fitted, with special competition gear ratios. The engine was specially tuned with a polished cylinder head and ports. It could also be supplied with high compression ratio for petrol-benzol fuel, although the standard ratio of 6.6:1 was recommended. Priced at £59-17-00d ( £59-85p.) it was £5-5-00d ( £5-26p.) more expensive than the standard 1939 Model 66.

Our special thanks to the Pre-War Officer of the AJS&Matchless Owners Club of England for his dialog on this bike. One of the benefits of club membership is access to this type of information!
